Friday 9th of September 2011 - Donnelly River Weekend Away

This years Weekend Away is to Donnelly River Holiday Village; originally a timber town it is now a unique holiday destination 290 kilometres south of Perth in the Southern Forests close to Manjimup, Bridgetown and Nannup.

The secluded and picturesque village, preserved in its entirety, is nestled in tall timbered karri forest and provides a fascinating picture into the simpler and uncomplicated life in the fifties. Native fauna include kangaroos, possums, emus and plentiful bird life roam free through the village.

The village operated as a mill town for thirty years; the 35 workers cottages, workers club, school and general store were originally built for the timber mill workers and their families in the early 1950s. It has operated as a holiday village since the 1980s and is now listed on the State Heritage Council register.

Whilst cottages have been upgraded to incorporate a hot water service, electric stoves and microwaves, the dwellings remain largely unchanged with the wood stove in the kitchen, log fire in the lounge and a verandah to relax on.

The Club has booked eight 2, 3 and 4 bedroom self contained cottages with accommodation for 42 people.

The general store is open from 8:30 to 5 pm 7 days a week for coffee, bread, milk, takeaway food, etc.

You will need to bring sheets, doonas, blankets, pillow slips and towels (a hire service for linen is available with prior booking) as well as drinks for Friday and Saturday night, nibbles to share and breakfast provisions.

The plan is for you to make your own way down on Friday afternoon or evening; we will have the camp fire roaring when you arrive.

On Saturday we have a 280 km cruise taking in some of the better scenic driving roads as well as a tram ride from Pemberton deep into the forest. We end at Donnelly River with a "Taste of the South West Pizza Degustation" from a wood fired pizza oven.

This is followed on Sunday with a leisurely drive along the back roads to the Dardanup Tavern for lunch from where we each make our own way home.

Costs for the two night’s accommodation + the tram ride + Saturday dinner are a bargain at only $110 per person.

If you want to be in it book now by emailing events@mx5club.com.au, first in best dressed…
